Seeking out life

The eye of a true artist is able to behold what most of us look upon as normal stuff and see the potential for beauty and form. They take the mundane and bring forth what their inner being sees within the material. Michelangelo maintained that the forms for his statues were already present in the marble. He only freed them and gave them life.

That's a good analogy for the life of faith. Faith is often seeing beauty, the potential for love, the presence of God in the simple and mundane things of our life. Where others see negativity and even despair and death, the person of faith sees the gift of life and the possibilities for bringing forth life. Lazarus in today's gospel was for Jesus then an opportunity to reveal the power of divine life. In our families, in our workplaces, in our communities and in our parish, all become opportunities in the same way for the believer to call forth life out of what can be seemingly tombs and all for the glory of God. Look anew, then, at the same old life situations with eyes of faith and see the possibility for resurrection.
